Lay tubers flat on their side about 6 inches deep and 18 to 24 inches apart; plants reach 12 inches to over 5 feet and tall ones need staking.
Wait until the chance of a severe freeze has passed, since planting too early gives poor blooms; tuberous roots are injured below 25 °F.
