Garlic goes in during fall, not spring: roots grow over winter and the tops take off the next spring, and each planted clove becomes one bulb of 10 to 15 cloves.
Plant the largest cloves pointed end up; hardneck types form a scape that is removed so the plant puts its energy into the bulb.
