Carrots are always direct sown and emerge slowly, in 14 to 21 days; a crusted soil surface blocks the seedlings, so keep it moist or cover the seed with compost or fine sand.

Sowing radishes in the carrot row helps break the crust and marks the row while the carrots come up.
