How the chain link fence cost calculator works
Chain link is priced by the linear foot, and two things move that price more than anything else: how tall the fence is and whether the fabric is plain galvanized or vinyl-coated. The calculator lets you price either way. Pick a height to use HomeAdvisor's ranges by height, or pick a finish to use Fixr's ranges by finish. The two sources don't split their numbers the same way, so we keep them apart instead of blending them into one figure neither publisher gave.
Installed cost = fenced length (ft) × price per ft for the height or finish + gates × price per gate + removal + permit
Gate openings come off the length first, because the gate replaces fabric in that stretch and is priced on its own.
A worked example
A 150 foot run with two corners and one 4 foot walk gate leaves 146 feet of fabric.

The swing gate is HomeAdvisor's $100 to $450. Fixr prices a 4 by 4 foot swing gate at $110 to $120 installed, which you can pick in the gate list. For the 4 foot fence, the materials alone come to $438 to $1,022 at Fixr's $3 to $7 per foot.
How much more does a taller chain link fence cost?
HomeAdvisor's 2025 data gives $8 to $20 per foot at 4 feet, $10 to $29 at 6 feet and $17 to $40 at 10 feet. Going from 4 to 6 feet adds only $2 at the low end but $9 at the top. A taller fence also takes more fabric per foot and deeper footings: the chain link footing rule (ASTM F567) adds 3 inches of hole depth for every foot of height over 4 feet.

Galvanized or vinyl-coated?
Fixr's 2025 guide puts galvanized chain link at $13.15 to $28.50 per foot installed and vinyl-coated at $18.75 to $40.50. That is about 40% more at both ends of the range. Neither height nor finish is in the other publisher's split, so pick one view at a time in the calculator and compare the totals for your own fence line.
How much is labor?
HomeAdvisor says labor is about half of a chain link budget. Fixr splits it out at $10 to $20 per foot for labor and $3 to $7 per foot for materials. On 146 feet that is $1,460 to $2,920 in labor, so labor is the part a DIY build saves.
What about gates, removal and a permit?
A chain link swing gate runs $100 to $450 installed on HomeAdvisor. A driveway gate is a different purchase: Fixr gives $1,000 to $6,000 installed for any material. Pulling out an old fence adds $3 to $5 per foot (HomeAdvisor), or $450 to $750 on this 150 foot line. HomeAdvisor's chain link page lists a fence permit at $20 to $60, while Fixr's figure runs up to $400; the calculator uses $20 to $400.
How does chain link compare with other fences?
The chart under the calculator prices the same fence line in split rail, wood privacy, vinyl and aluminum. Chain link is see-through, so it gives no privacy.
