How the fence cost calculator works

A fence quote is mostly a per foot price times the length that gets fence material, plus a fixed price for each gate. The calculator takes your fence line from the total length, the sides, or the line you draw on the map, subtracts the gate openings, and multiplies what is left by the low and high end of the published installed range for the material you pick.

Installed cost = fenced length (ft) × installed price per ft + gates × price per gate + removal + permit

Removal is priced on the whole old fence line, gates included, because the old fence has to come out along its full length. The permit is a flat fee. Every figure stays a range from low to high, never one price, because contractors quote from local labor rates, soil, access and grade, and the published ranges show how far those pull apart.

A worked example

A back yard fence runs 150 feet with two corners and one 4 foot walk gate. That leaves 146 feet of fence. In wood privacy at $17 to $50 per foot:

  • Fence: 146 × $17 = $2,482, 146 × $50 = $7,300
  • One wood gate: $200 to $600
  • Installed total: $2,682 to $7,900, or $18.37 to $54.11 per foot all in

Switch on removal and the permit and the range becomes $3,152 to $9,150: the old fence adds 150 × $3 to $5, which is $450 to $750, and the permit adds $20 to $500.

The chart under the calculator prices the same 146 feet and one gate in every material. Chain link comes out at $1,268 to $6,290, vinyl at $2,490 to $10,260. The overlap is the useful part: a cheap vinyl quote can beat an expensive wood one.

Where the price ranges come from

The installed ranges combine HomeAdvisor's fence cost guides (2025 data, updated in 2026) with Fixr's 2025 guides. Where they disagree, the range spans both. HomeAdvisor puts the national range at $6 to $50 per foot, with $23 the most common figure and an average project of $3,277 (normal range $1,860 to $4,843). Fixr's average project is $4,500, with most between $3,000 and $7,000.

Homewyse, whose September 2026 calculator prices a basic pressure-treated wood fence on 4x4 posts set in concrete at 8 foot spacing, comes out at $32.36 to $52.49 per foot. That sits inside our wood range, toward the top.

For farm fence, Iowa State University Extension's 2024 budget, which counts labor at $20 an hour, lands at $1.41 per foot for woven wire, $1.16 for five strand barbed wire and $0.92 for non-electric high tensile over a quarter mile. Those are well under the contractor ranges because the budget prices the farmer's own labor, not a crew.

What does it cost to repair a fence instead?

HomeAdvisor's repair guide puts the average repair at $618, with most jobs between $304 and $948 and extremes from $50 to $5,450. Fixr gives $200 to $850. Typical items: one post about $270, a gate repair $100 to $400, a fallen section $150 to $400, a rotten section $150 to $500. How much is fence removal and replacement?

Tearing out and hauling away an old fence runs $3 to $5 per foot on HomeAdvisor, which works out to $450 to $750 for 150 feet. Fixr gives $2 to $5 per foot for wood. Fixr prices a full replacement at $3,600 to $7,800 including $600 to $800 for removal and disposal. To price your own replacement, turn on the removal switch.

Do you need a permit?

HomeAdvisor lists $20 to $60 for a fence permit on its main guide, but $100 to $500 on its wood fence page; Fixr gives $70 to $400. The calculator adds $20 to $500 when you switch it on, which spans all three figures. Your building department sets the real fee and tells you whether you need one at all.

Why do quotes vary so much by region?

Labor is roughly half of a fence project, according to HomeAdvisor, and labor rates follow local wages. PermitDeck's April 2026 model puts New York about 42% above the national average. Get at least two quotes and compare them per foot, with gates and removal split out, against the figures here.
