How many zucchini plants per person
Virginia Cooperative Extension's planting guide recommends 1 to 2 zucchini plants per person for each planting, and it lists 3 plantings of summer squash in spring and summer. The calculator takes the middle, 1.5 plants per person, rounds each planting up to whole plants and multiplies by three. One person needs 2 plants per sowing, 6 over the season; a family of four needs 6 per sowing, 18 in all.
That sounds like a lot of zucchini, and it is meant to be spread out: you never have all 18 plants growing at once. Each sowing replaces the one before as it slows down.

How the numbers are built:
- Row feet place the plants 27 inches apart, the middle of the 18 to 36 inches in the row that Virginia Tech and Colorado State give, summed over all three sowings.
- Raised bed space uses the square foot method at one plant per two squares, again for the whole season.
- Harvest uses Virginia Tech's 20 to 80 lb per 10 feet of row. The range is wide because it covers every summer squash type and how often you pick.
Because the plantings follow each other, the space you need at any one time is about a third of the season figure: for four people, 6 plants, or 12 square feet of bed per sowing.
Why fresh and preserving match
The sources in the crop data give zucchini a fresh eating figure only, with no separate count for freezing or pickling. The table on the calculator shows the same number in both columns rather than inventing one. If you plan to freeze or bake with a lot of zucchini, use the high end of Virginia Tech's range, 2 plants per person per sowing.
Making the numbers fit your plot
- Short on space: grow one sowing only. Four people then need 6 plants, not 18.
- Containers: one plant per 5 gallon bucket, per Virginia Tech's and Colorado State's container guides.
- Pick young: about 7 to 8 inches long. One plant can give six or more fruit a week.
