How many tomato plants per person
Utah State University Extension suggests 2 to 3 tomato plants per person for eating fresh and 7 to 13 plants per person if you also can, freeze or make sauce. The calculator uses the middle of each range, 2.5 and 10 plants, and rounds the household total up to whole plants.
For a family of four that is 10 plants for fresh eating, or 40 with preserving.

Row length is plants × 27 inches, the middle of the 18 to 36 inch in-row spacing from Virginia Cooperative Extension. The harvest range is Virginia Tech's 15 to 45 lb per 10 feet of row, applied to that length. Treat it as a guide: variety and season decide where you land.
How much space that takes
At 1 plant per square foot in a raised bed, 10 tomatoes need 10 square feet, a third of a 4 × 8 bed. That is the tight square foot figure for plants tied to one stake. At the 24 inches each way the tomato spacing calculator starts on, a 4 × 8 bed holds 8 plants, so a household of four growing for fresh eating needs just over one bed. The preserving figure of 40 plants is a job for in-ground rows: about 90 feet of row, at 36 to 50 inches between rows.
Adjusting the numbers
- Determinate varieties have a concentrated fruit set, so much of the crop arrives at once, which helps when you plan a canning day.
- Indeterminate varieties keep ripening fruit over a long season, which suits a steady supply for the table.
- Choose Fresh + preserving above only if you really will process the surplus: it quadruples the plant count.
